Gay Fort Lauderdale

Just got back from the 4th of July weekend in Fort Lauderdale.

Will update the report soon, but here are our hotel recommendations....

Coral Reef Guesthouse  - East of Route One between Middle River & Intracostal

This guesthouse was on our list to check out, but we never made it over.

We tried to find 13th Ct, but didn't have exact instructions, so we didn't realize that it is on the other side of the bridge on Sunrise. We stayed west of Route 1 on 13th Street and ended up finding The Cabanas instead. We were so impressed by The Cabanas, that we stayed there and never continued our search (see listing below).

Mixed reviews on TripAdvisor seem to be getting better, so we'll probably stay a few nights at Coral Reef on our next trip to Fort Lauderdale.

Inn Leather - Near Airport at SE19th St & US1

We've been staying at Inn Leather for years - but checked-out early and moved.  Its not the same hotel it used to be. We won't rebook.

Room was never cleaned in the 3 nights we stayed. Full sized bed was OK - but they had recently replaced it and there was plenty of room for a larger bed. Furniture was a mix of leather and grandma's attic. Bathroom tiles had been painted-over with regular house paint and were a mess.  Again, bathroom never cleaned during our stay.

Too bad, since this hotel has lots of potential - but high price/low quality is never a good formula. Maybe its scheduled to be torn-down and rebuilt as luxury condos like the other houses on the block.

Manhattan Tower Apartment Hotel - Intra-costal near beach.

This apartment hotel used to be the corporate retreat for General Motors in 1952, hence the fabulous mid-century modern tower in front. Hasn't changed much from this old postcard photo.

One & two-bedroom apartments decorated with eclectic 50's/ 60's decor that will make you smile. Units are reserved well in advance for high season.. Best kept secret studios at the back (street side) near the pool.

Front of the hotel is on the intra-costal with dock for the water taxi over to the Sunrise malls. Very friendly management. Check it out!

New Zealand House - Holiday Park/Sunrise Blvd

This guesthouse has a great location - jut one block from Holiday Park and Sunrise Blvd.  Easy access to bars, shops and a short drive to the beach. Pool area is just inside the front gate and then rooms in the building behind.

The room we checked out was very comfortable with lots of space, two double beds and a great bathroom. Only problem was that they were sold out - so if you want to stay here, book early.

Owners/managers live right next door and take care of everything - and yes, they are from New Zealand.  Nice mix of friendly guys as guests.

The Cabanas at Wilton Mannor Location

We stopped at this guesthouse just to take a look and ending up booking a room for the next three nights.

Great staff and very friendly guests with a layout that has lots of space to get away if you like. Two pools, Jacuzzi, dock with kayaks, breakfast room and community computer plus free Wi-Fi made our stay here great!

Room had one of the most comfortable king beds I've found in a hotel.

Only drawback is the lack of a work space if you bring your own computer, but the owner helped bring a table in for me to use - and promises to look into a permanent solution. I already booked my next stay!
